What are DGCA/CAA Permits?

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), also referred to as CAA India (Civil Aviation Authority), is the governing body responsible for civil aviation regulation in India. All foreign and domestic non-scheduled aircraft operating into, within, or over Indian territory must secure prior permission from DGCA/CAA. This applies to:

  • Landing and takeoff operations
  • Overflights and technical stops
  • Charter and private business jet missions
  • Aerial work such as survey, film shooting, or medical evacuation

In addition, military clearance is required for operations involving military airfields, restricted zones, or sensitive airspace. These approvals are coordinated with the Indian Air Force or Ministry of Defence, depending on the nature of the mission and destination.

When are These Permits Required?

Overflight and landing permits are essential for any non-scheduled international operation entering Indian airspace. These regulatory approvals ensure that flights comply with India’s civil aviation and security protocols. Whether it’s a routine private charter or a specialized mission, obtaining the correct permits is crucial for smooth and lawful operations.

Permits are required for:

  • International charter flights entering or crossing Indian airspace

  • Private, non-scheduled operations planning to land or make a technical stop in India

  • Flights transporting government officials, VIPs, or foreign dignitaries

  • Missions involving aerial surveys, humanitarian aid, or medical evacuations

  • Aircraft operations for film shoots, promotional events, or participation in airshows
